Galicia is the finish of the Saint Jacques Way, el fin del Camino de Santiago

The history of this region dates back to ancient times. The Celts are believed to have settled in Galician in around 700 BCE when people lived mainly from farming. The remains of fortified settlements ??? known as castros ??? built by these people have been found. The Celtic tribe that lived in Galicia was known as the 'Brigantes'; indeed, the principal centre of war and trade of this tribe was Brigantia, situated where today the city of A Coruña stands. Home to the most powerful inhabitants of this region, it was the point from which many foreign ships set sail, loaded with tin and gold. A Coruña's best-known landmark is the Tower of Hercules. Legend has it that the giant Geryon was slain by the hero Hercules and buried at the foot of the tower, which has been known ever since as the Tower of Hercules. Lugh, a hero of Celtic mythology, was also claimed to have glimpsed Ireland from the top of the tower. It is believed that the tower was used to worship a sun god during the Celtic period.

This period was followed by an age of Roman and Swebian rule, the impact of which was far greater than in the rest of Spain. Galicia's medieval period is marked by the discovery of the tomb of the Apostle Saint James, which turned Santiago de Compostela into one of the three Holy Cities of Christianity, together with Jerusalem and Rome. It was during this time that the Way of Saint James was forged. Its unique history has led to the creation of a series of notable features and a personality of its own, making this intriguing region unlike any other. Proof of this unique nature can be found in its language - Gallego, a language with a sweet and lilting rhythm, its Feudal System, its folklore, deeply rooted in the Celtic age and which is noted for the hauntingly beautiful sound of its most traditional musical instrument, the gaita or pipes, a wide range of magnificent crafts, the highlight of which has to be the eye-catching Sargadelos ceramics, and a cultural tradition that lives on today amongst its people and that takes the form of countless popular festivals and processions.
